Our Story

By Founder, Serena Gess

Greenaway’s Herbal Ointments began in 1999 after my daughter was born.

At that stage it was almost impossible to find completely natural baby products in the shops.

Knowing that much of what we put on our skins is absorbed into the bloodstream, I decided to make my own all-natural ointments to use on her delicate skin.

Researching traditional ointments, I came across a recipe that used a combination of cold-pressed seed oils and beeswax as the base. This combination is stable and does not need any preservatives.

I use cold-pressed sunflower oil, as it is non-irritant, doesn’t block pores and is suitable for all skin types. Its high concentrations of vitamin E and fatty acids are highly nourishing for the skin.

Beeswax is a potent healer in its own right. Being rich in fatty acids, it gives a glow to the skin, helps to retain moisture and contributes elasticity and faster healing.

The herb garden was thriving, so for my first ointment I selected a combination of herbs that would cover a wide range of ailments whilst growing well in our climate.

This initial combination of Comfrey, Lavender and Plantain remains my most popular ointment due to its amazing healing benefits on a wide variety of different ailments.

The range has grown to include Calendula Ointment, a natural Moisturiser, a Lip Balm and a Baby’s Balm.

The ointments were originally packaged in hand-thrown ceramic jars, but as volumes have increased, I now mainly use glass jars. Ceramic jars are still available in limited quantities.

The herb garden has expanded over the years and produces most of the herbs I use, all organically grown.

The garden is pollinated by our own bees, which also provide some of the beeswax needed for the ointments.

The herbs are used freshly picked, hence the green tint to the ointments, and only blemish-free and vibrant plant material is used.

I blend all the ointments by hand.
